The company behind Swartberg Eco Explore and True South Travel operates in Oudtshoorn in the Western Cape. In 2005 Jan Bester started a social upliftment programme in the Cango Valley under the banner Friends of Voorbedacht. It focused on the children of Voorbedacht Primary School and on job creation in a community with high unemployment. Specialist tourist guides were trained to lead tours for local and foreign travellers. In 2007 the guided tours were extended nationally, which led to the founding of True South Travel. Its mission is to bring hope to rural communities through sustainable upliftment and conservation.
