About
Thanda Safari is a game reserve in northern KwaZulu-Natal, about 260km north of Durban and just north of the Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve. The area was once the royal hunting ground of King Shaka. In 1895 the Mdletshe Game Reserve, where Thanda Safari is now, was proclaimed the first protected reserve in Africa, though it was deproclaimed in 1907 because of a lack of water. To reach the reserve, drive about 20km past the Hluhluwe turn-off, turn left onto the D242 and follow the gravel road for about 5km to the gate. Transfers from Richards Bay or King Shaka International Airport can be arranged.
